Design & Build Garden Transformation Near Honiton
Our client approached us to design and build a contemporary garden for their new-build home near Honiton, Devon. From the outset, they were clear they wanted a single design-and-build company to take full responsibility for the project.
The garden was predominantly laid to lawn, sloping awkwardly into one corner, with a typical developer-installed terrace adjoining the rear of the property. It lacked structure, purpose and character — a bland and uninspiring space with limited usability.
Following appointment, we were commissioned to create a modern, multi-level garden that combined both straight and curved lines. The brief included:
- A dedicated space for a small art room
- Formal dining and entertaining areas
- A relaxed seating space for morning coffee and reading
- A discreet utility zone for clothes drying and storage
- Vibrant planting to attract wildlife, including fruit-bearing trees
Importantly, the client had one strict requirement — no lawn within the main garden area.
The Challenge
- Significant slope falling into one corner of the garden
- Restricted access and a narrow pinch point limiting machinery
- Large volumes of material requiring careful handling
- Integrating a suitable platform for the art room
- Challenging weather conditions during the build programme
Our Approach
Following detailed site analysis, we produced a comprehensive design package including layout plans, planting plans, sections, elevations and full construction drawings. After minor revisions, the design was signed off and the build phase commenced.
To overcome the awkward levels, we introduced a series of split terraces to create structured, usable spaces.
Key features included:
- A generous Egyptian limestone terrace spanning the rear elevation, forming the principal dining and entertaining space.
- An L-shaped limestone step arrangement leading down to a secondary terrace, edged with limestone setts and designed for large outdoor sofas and relaxed seating.
- A Corten steel bubbling water bowl positioned within a raised bed, providing visual impact and the calming sound of moving water while attracting birds.
- Raised planting beds introducing structure, height and architectural form.
- A circular limestone terrace forming a secluded reading and coffee area, covered by a pergola to provide shade and vertical interest.
- Trachelospermum jasminoides planted at the base of each pergola leg, selected for its delicate white flowers and distinctive sweet fragrance.
- The client-selected art room carefully positioned in the corner of the garden and integrated into the wider landscape design.
Planting focused on vibrant colour and seasonal interest, designed to support pollinators and wildlife, including espalier apple and pear trees.
The Result
The completed garden is a contemporary, multi-level landscape that feels cohesive, structured and inviting.
Distinct zones now provide:
- A generous dining and entertaining terrace
- A relaxed sofa lounge area
- A secluded circular retreat for quiet moments
- A functional yet discreet utility space
- A beautifully positioned art room with wider views across the garden
