The Atlantes Landscapes founder: Paul Bentley

Paul Bentley started his landscape career in 1982 and trained at many colleges including Merrist Wood College in Guildford. He then went on to launch our company, then called The Landscape Gardener, back in the early 90s when he was still working for his local fire service. With years of landscape design training under his belt, the reputation of Paul and his team quickly grew, thanks to his innovative approach to garden design, the superior workmanship of his landscapers and the exceptional level of customer service offered to clients.

Paul trained for three years at Merrist Wood Horticultural College, studying Landscape Horticulture and Landscape Practices, and passing with Distinction. He also trained for one year at Brinsbury College where he gained a NVQ3 in Arboriculture, and another year at The Garden Design School, where he passed his Diploma in Garden Design with Credit, AQF L3 in Horticulture and Landscape Practices and NVQ L7 in Senior Site Management.

      Paul started his career in Landscaping when he left school in 1982, following in his father’s agricultural and horticultural footsteps.

      He moved to Devon in 2018 following a long and successful period in London running his project management company, working on exclusive landscape projects such as 33 King William Street, The National Army Museum, One Tower Bridge and many others.

      Since moving to Devon, Paul has continued his career by building Atlantes Landscapes into highly successful, multi-disciplinary landscaping company working on projects throughout the South West.

      Paul is the Managing Director of Atlantes Landscapes and is also the head designer of the company.

      Paul’s expertise has been used by public and private clients on projects ranging through parks, educational, retail, museums, rural and countryside.

      Paul also sits on the BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) adjudication panel for new designers wishing to join the association as a registered designer and is also a designer member of the Society of Garden Designers and BALI.

      Denise brings a wealth of experience to Atlantes Landscapes as an accomplished Architect, Interior Designer, and Housing Development Specialist. Her extensive background in the building and construction sector has given her a comprehensive understanding of landscape design, structural planning, and the seamless integration of outdoor and indoor spaces. This expertise directly enhances the quality and creativity of our Landscaping and Garden Design services.

      As a key figure in team management and organisational development, Denise focuses on streamlining workflows and implementing effective growth strategies that support both the team and the business. Her leadership ensures that every Landscaping project is delivered with precision, professionalism, and a strong commitment to client satisfaction. By driving efficiency and nurturing talent, Denise plays a vital role in sustaining our reputation for excellence and enhancing the overall client experience.

      Cameron is a dedicated Landscape Architect with a strong focus on sustainability and ecological design. He holds both a BSc(Hons) and a Master’s in Landscape Architecture from the University of Sheffield, where he developed a deep understanding of how to shape spaces that are both functional and environmentally enriching.

      With completed horticultural training, Cameron brings a well-rounded approach to his designs—balancing technical precision with a sensitivity to planting, biodiversity, and the natural environment.

      Outside of work, you’ll often find him rock climbing or catching waves along the Devon coast.

      Alex is a valued and experienced member of the Atlantes Landscapes team, having progressed from Landscape Operative to Landscape Team Leader and then to Senior Landscape Team Leader. With a Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture and Garden Design from Capel Manor College, he combines strong technical knowledge with practical, hands-on expertise.

      Known for his clear vision in team management and his willingness to support others, Alex leads by example—with dedication, hard work, and a consistently positive attitude. His passion for continuous learning keeps him evolving alongside the team.

      Outside of work, Alex enjoys testing his skills at the snooker table, discovering new travel spots, and unwinding on long walks—often followed by time spent with his two cats and a well-deserved coffee and bacon sandwich.

      Oliver is our Landscape Team Leader and someone who thrives on working outdoors. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking coastal paths, climbing, and mountain biking, which reflects his energetic and hands-on approach on site. Growing up in West Yorkshire helped shape his strong work ethic and practical mindset, both of which he brings into every project.

      Family is at the core of Oliver’s values, and professionally, he is motivated by leaving a positive and lasting impression through the gardens he helps create. He particularly enjoys building gardens from the ground up, taking satisfaction in transforming spaces through careful planning, precision, and attention to detail.

      Known for his eye for detail and commitment to high standards, Oliver takes pride in delivering well-finished, thoughtful landscapes. Outside of landscaping, he enjoys shooting and is currently rebuilding a vintage Land Rover Defender, another hands-on project that suits his patience, focus, and enjoyment of creating something built to last.

      Chris combines a deep appreciation for nature with a strong commitment to craftsmanship. His passion for working outdoors naturally led him into gardening, where he quickly progressed from maintenance to more creative and technical landscaping. He takes pride in building beautiful, lasting spaces—his favourite projects involve rockeries and ponds, where he can blend structure, planting, and habitat creation into one seamless design.

      Outside of work, Chris keeps active through bouldering and long hikes (preferably with a well-earned pub stop). For him, gardens aren’t just outdoor spaces—they’re essential for wellbeing, and he’s dedicated to making each one the best it can be.

      Elliot began his landscaping journey by running his own garden and grounds maintenance business before moving further into groundworks. He was drawn to the trade by the chance to work outdoors, stay active, and see real results at the end of each day.

      As a Landscape Operative, he supports projects from site preparation through to installation, helping with both hard and soft landscaping. He enjoys planting and creating paths that blend naturally into the overall design, and he’s always happy when there’s a digger involved.

      Currently studying RHS Level 2 Principles of Horticulture and trained in digger and dumper operation, Elliot combines practical skill with strong attention to detail. He believes respect for the client’s home and investment is essential and takes pride in delivering a clean, professional finish.

      Outside of work, he plays the guitar, trains in martial arts, runs, and spends as much time outdoors as possible.

      Stewart brings a wealth of experience and a deep sense of pride to his work at Atlantes Landscapes. His career began in The Cotswolds as a PGA-qualified golf professional, but over time, his passion shifted from playing courses to maintaining them. This natural transition led him into greenkeeping and specialist turf care—skills he now applies to gardens and grounds across Devon.

      Whether it’s regular maintenance or a one-off clearance, Stewart finds real reward in seeing the difference made by the end of each day. A recent highlight was transforming an overgrown garden at a historic home in Torbay—leaving a lasting impression on both the client and the property’s story.

      Known for his integrity and strong work ethic, Stewart holds himself to high standards and consistently aims to exceed expectations.

      Outside of work, he’s a devoted family man who enjoys beach trips in any weather, once completed a 100-kilometre walk without sleep, and (apparently) danced for the Bolshoi Ballet. He also once shared a spear of asparagus with a Harry Potter actor while bonding over their mutual distrust of cheese—a moment so oddly specific it must be true.

      He finds real motivation in spending quality time with his girlfriend and step-kids, as well as enjoying simple everyday moments like watching football or relaxing with video games. These interests keep him grounded and energised, helping him approach each day with a clear and focused mindset.

      In his work, Aaron enjoys the ever-changing nature of the outdoors. He appreciates that no two days are the same and loves being able to make a visible difference in the gardens he cares for. His strongest quality is his eye for small details, ensuring every space he works on is finished to a high standard.

      Michael grew up on the edge of the New Forest in Hythe, which sparked his lifelong love of the outdoors. Today, he brings that passion into every garden, combining high standards with seriously impressive plant knowledge.

      He’s particularly fond of apple pruning—nothing beats a perfectly shaped tree and a strong fruit crop the following year. What really motivates him is seeing a task completed well and knowing he’s created something with his own hands. Outside work, he hosts board game nights and leads fungus identification forays, contributing to the Fungus Conservation Trust. When it comes to plants, pruning, pests, or diseases, chances are Michael already knows the answer.

This connection continues to inspire him, particularly through his walks along the South West Coast Path with his dog, Murray.

      Outside of work, Nick enjoys a well-rounded lifestyle, he supports Brighton & Hove Albion, plays darts, and has a keen interest in music, films, and reading.

      In his professional life, Nick takes pride in the variety that garden maintenance offers, especially the satisfaction of seeing clear before-and-after transformations. His flexibility, keen eye for detail, and strong work ethic make him a valuable member of any team.
