Atlantes Landscapes Supports YMCA at Cove House, Paignton

Atlantes Landscapes recently took part in a meaningful volunteering project in Paignton, supporting a new supported housing development that will soon provide accommodation for young people at risk of homelessness.

Cove House, located on Cliff Road overlooking Paignton Bay, is being developed by the YMCA Exeter as part of its wider mission to offer safe housing, stability, and structured support for vulnerable young adults across Devon.

As a landscaping company based in Exeter and working across Devon, we were proud to contribute our time and expertise to help improve the outdoor environment of this important project.

Our Role on Site

Our team travelled to Paignton to volunteer on the external landscaping around Cove House, focusing on creating structure and improving the usability of the garden space for future residents.

Works completed included:

Planting 45 Griselinia hedging plants around the perimeter of the site
Establishing natural boundaries to improve privacy and definition
Adding structure to the outdoor space to support future landscaping development
Creating a greener and more welcoming environment for residents

The hedge plants, supplied by Quercus Nursery, will develop into a strong natural boundary over time, helping shape a calmer and more secure outdoor setting.

Why This Project Matters to Us

Supporting Young People Through the YMCA

During the day, we had the opportunity to hear more about the work of YMCA Exeter and the purpose behind Cove House.

The development will provide supported accommodation for young people in Torbay who need stability and guidance as they move towards independent living. The outdoor environment is a key part of that journey, offering a space for residents to feel settled and supported.

Being involved in a project that directly contributes to the lives of young people in Devon was something our team valued highly.

Our Approach to Volunteering

This project reflects how we approach community involvement at Atlantes Landscapes. We aim to apply the same standards used in our landscaping, garden design, and garden maintenance work across Exeter and Devon to selected volunteer projects where we can make a real difference.

For us, it is about using practical skills in a way that delivers lasting benefit beyond commercial work.

Looking Ahead

By the end of the day, the new hedge line had been successfully planted, marking an important step in the development of Cove House’s outdoor space.

We are proud to have supported this project and to have worked alongside the YMCA Exeter team in Paignton. We look forward to continuing to support initiatives across Devon where landscaping can contribute to positive social impact.

Microbiome Garden: Our Participation At RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024

We’re very excited to announce we will be building a garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024, designed by @chrishullgardens and @sidhillecogardens and in partnership with @bowelresearchuk and @project.giving.back

The Bowel Research UK Microbiome Garden draws inspiration from medical and botanical research, exploring the fascinating connection between a healthy landscape, a healthy gut, and a healthy mind. It aims to inspire people to rewild their diets, gardens and their relationship with the land.

The garden focuses on the connection between the ecological health of a landscape and the health of our own gut flora. Informed by ancient cultures that have tended and harvested the landscape around them, we have designed a beautiful and diverse garden that harnesses edibles to improve both physical and mental health, using the gut microbiome as a catalyst.

The charity’s mission is to save and improve people’s lives funding cutting edge treatments for bowel disease by investing in pioneering research.

Your Microbiome Explained

Your microbiome refers to the vast community of microorganisms that reside in and on your body, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other tiny organisms. These microbes play crucial roles in various bodily functions, such as digestion, immune system regulation, and even mood regulation. Your microbiome is incredibly diverse and unique, influenced by factors like genetics, diet, lifestyle, and environment.

Microbiome & The Landscape Around You

The connection between your microbiome and the landscape around you lies in the constant interaction between your body and the environment. The microbes in your microbiome are not isolated entities but are constantly influenced by the external world. For example, the food you eat, the air you breathe, and the surfaces you touch all introduce new microbes to your body and affect the composition of your microbiome. Likewise, your microbiome can also influence the environment around you by releasing certain compounds or interacting with other organisms. This interconnectedness highlights the intricate relationship between human health, environmental health, and the microbial world.

We’re backing the Society of Garden Designers’ Campaign Against Artificial Grass

Here at Atlantes Landscapes, we’re passionate about the power of nature and the way we can use our gardens and outdoor spaces to make a positive contribution to our local environment.

We’ve been concerned for a while about the growing popularity of artificial grass for a number of reasons. While we understand that it might be convenient and requires little maintenance for homeowners, we believe that not only are you losing the many benefits you get from natural grass, but that it can cause serious long-term harm to our environment.

We’re particularly pleased, then, that the Society of Garden Designers – of which we are a proud member – has launched a campaign in association with the Royal Horticultural Society and Landscape Institute to encourage homeowners to ditch the plastic and return to real, living grass lawns.

Why are Artificial Lawns so Bad for the Environment?

There are a number of things that make artificial grass an all-round bad choice, not least what they’re made of. Manufacturers may come up with lots of great-sounding names for their products, but the simple truth is that most are made of non-biodegradable plastic – and we all know what long-term damage that can cause.

But the harm caused by synthetic lawns isn’t just about introducing more plastic into the world – after all, imagine the fuss if someone was encouraging you to place hundreds of plastic bags in your garden. Plastic lawns don’t last forever, and while they are out in your garden in all weathers, they are causing pollution, including leaking poisonous microfibres into your soil.

They also prevent the insects, birds and other wildlife, including microorganisms that are vital for the wellbeing of our soil, from thriving – meaning they represent a genuine threat to the food chain and biodiversity that are essential for life on earth to flourish.

Meanwhile, plastic grass also retains heat to a much greater degree than natural grass, which means that they are also contributing to climate change.

Mark Gush, Head of Environmental Horticulture at the RHS, said: “Plastic grass creates a sterile, lifeless area in the garden which has been shown to harm earthworms, exacerbate flooding risk, contribute to the heat island effect, and shed tiny plastic pieces, known as microfibres, which are harmful to the health of animals and people. By adopting a planet friendly gardening approach to design, we can help to mitigate the impact of climate change and promote biodiversity.”

What Are The Alternatives?

We will always support using natural grass for your lawn, because it’s sustainable, environmentally-friendly and supports all the wildlife we want and need in our gardens.

However, as we said earlier, we understand that many people like the benefits of a lawn that requires less care and maintenance than grass – but that doesn’t mean you have no choice other than plastic. Tapestry, chamomile and clover lawns all represent attractive, low-maintenance options, requiring little or no mowing while also attracting those essential bugs and pollinators.
